Deep tissue massage is focused massage on a specific problem area. The deeper layers of muscles are accessed using slower more precise pressure. This more focused work is used to increase circulation and release metabolic waste in deep muscle fibers. Adhesions in the muscles and chronic muscle contractions can be released. This will help to re-establish ease of movement.

Communication with the client is essential during this deeper work to assure it is done within the comfort zone of the client. The muscles can often feel a bit tender one or two days following a deep tissue massage, similar to the soreness one feels after a good workout at the gym.
